Hiring a Temporary Foreign Worker for a High-Wage position

The Temporary Foreign Worker Program should be used only when there is a short-term skill and labour shortage and no Canadians or permanent residents can do the job.

To hire a temporary foreign worker you require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)

There are certain prerequisites needed to file a Labour Market Impact Assessment

  • Determine if you truly need one
  • Ensure there will not be a "Refusal to Process" for your LMIA application
  • Verify the correct stream you want to apply for

Applying for an LMIA

Your LMIA application can be submitted 6 months before the expected start date

You have 2 methods to apply

  • LMIA Online Portal

    To access the LMIA Online Portal, as an employer, you must have a Job Bank account to authenticate you. Once your Job Bank account is created, you will be able to complete an LMIA Application using the LMIA Online Portal.
